It’s not just Coffee: Cafe Moto

“We drink all we can, the rest we sell”

Luckily Cafe Moto is well stocked with plenty of coffee to go around.  Even though it’s the best coffee I’ve ever tasted, Cafe Moto is much more than the product they sell. They’re a local company that believes in making a difference in people’s lives one bean at a time.

IMG_20130215_210932Not only are 75% of their coffee and tea products certified Fair Trade, but Cafe Moto also had a hand in founding an all female co-op of coffee farmers in Nicaragua—Las Hermanas. What’s great about Las Hermanas is that 100% of their organic coffee crop is exclusive to Cafe Moto. Although Las Hermanas’ coffee is the favorite for many, Cafe Moto still sells a large selection of coffee from different regions of the world, like India, Africa, Indonesia, and South and Central America, all of which are certified kosher.

Cafe Moto roasters run on solar power from the 100 panels on the roof. They roast 250 lbs. of coffee every 15 minutes, 4 days a week, supplying coffee to cafés and coffee carts all over San Diego.

“We just want to continue to be sustainable,” says Torrey Lee, the CEO of Cafe Moto. The key to being a successful, sustainable business is to “sell and buy things we believe in” and “get the right product for the right people”.

The Cafe Moto team is always educating and encouraging customers to try the product before they buy. I recently had the opportunity to attend a Cafe Moto coffee tasting and was impressed with the presentation. I, along with nine other guests, got to try coffee from three different regions.  It was interesting to learn about the processes for the different types of beans and how to score the flavor, body, consistency, and aftertaste.  It takes about a year to produce 1 lb. of Cafe Moto coffee. Considering the quality of work that goes into their coffee, I’ve gained a new appreciation for their unique flavor.

A visit to Cafe Moto is an experience that is not about getting the largest cup of coffee the quickest. The friendly coffee artists there will know your name, and not just because they’ve written it on your cup a hundred times. They care about their customers and what they drink. If nothing catches your eye on their menu, you can’t go wrong with trying the Baristi’s Choice. They’ll surprise you every time.

Don’t let other places fool you with flavor, when all that really matters is quality.  Leave it to the pros at Cafe Moto. They know how coffee should taste.
